The Farm Bureau Awards Finalists for the 2018 Football Season have been announced and two Benton Panthers have been named by Hootens Arkansas Football.
Kelby Caffery is one of three finalists for the Class 6-A/7-A Defensive Player of the Year. Kelby played the Spur position, a hybrid linebacker-defensive back position in the Panther defense and recorded 105 tackles. Caffery led the team in tackles-for-loss with 19 and forced fumbles with five, finished second on the team in interceptions with five and quarterback sacks with four. In addition to starring defensively, Caffery also excelled on special teams, returning nine kickoffs for a 24.6 yard per return average, including an 80-yard kickoff return for touchdown against Lake Hamilton and 13 punts for a 14.7 yard per return average with a long of 33 yards.
Brad Harris has been named a finalist for the Class 6-A/7-A Coach of the Year. Coach Harris led the Panthers to a 10-3 season with the only losses coming to Bryant (7-A State Champion) and Greenwood twice (6-A State Champion). Since arriving in Benton in 2014 as the Defensive Coordinator, Coach Harris has been a part of the winningest five-year stretch in Benton football history, 45 wins from 2014-2018. Coach Harris assumed the Head Coach role in 2016 and has won 66% of his games as the Head Coach, ranking him fourth all-time in winning percentage at Benton (Henry Finkbeiner, 1930 & 1934, 90%; William Wilkerson, 1933, 88%; Tom Hardin, 1961-1965, 75%). In Coach Harris’ three years leading Panther football, Benton has reached the State Semifinals (2016), State Quaterfinals (2017), and State Championship game (2018).
The awards will be presented on Monday, December 10. The Benton Touchdown Club wishes the best of luck to Kelby and Coach Harris and celebrate your achievements on a memorable season.
